Doha 2026: A Global Cultural Hub Unveiled at International Book Fair

A Cultural Milestone: The 35th Doha International Book Fair

The 35th edition of the Doha International Book Fair has set a new benchmark in cultural events, showcasing Qatar’s growing influence on the global literary scene. Organized by the Ministry of Culture, this year's fair has drawn massive crowds, publishers, writers, and intellectuals from across the Arab world and beyond. Running until May 23, it has already surpassed previous editions in scale and impact.

This year's figures are impressive. Over 1.85 million books are displayed across 910 pavilions, representing more than 231,000 titles in Arabic and foreign languages. Around 520 publishing houses from 37 countries are participating, offering a wide range of literary, academic, scientific, and artistic publications.

A Hub of Intellectual Exchange

The exhibition halls have transformed into a bustling cultural arena where readers, publishers, researchers, and families move through packed corridors filled with discussions, book signings, and intellectual exchange. Jassim Ahmed Al Buainain, director of the Book Fair and director of Libraries Department at the Ministry of Culture, described this year’s edition as a milestone in the history of the event.

“This is the largest edition ever organised since the establishment of the Doha International Book Fair,” Al Buainain said. “The numbers themselves reflect the growth of the exhibition and the increasing regional and international confidence in Doha as a centre for culture and publishing.”

A New Concept: The Guest of Honor

This year’s concept introduced a different approach regarding the traditional "guest of honour" selection. Instead of a country, the guest of honor is the book “This is Qatar,” which highlights the cultural and historical value it represents. The publication, issued in six volumes, documents various dimensions of Qatar’s cultural, artistic, and intellectual history.

Al Buainain emphasized that the exhibition aims to strengthen reading culture while creating stronger connections between readers and the publishing industry. “The fair has become a meeting point for publishers, writers, and audiences from different countries. We are witnessing growing engagement from younger generations and families, which is extremely encouraging for the future of reading and cultural awareness,” he said.

Strong Official Support

The exhibition opened amid strong official support for the cultural sector. Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani described the fair as an embodiment of Qatar’s commitment to intellectual and human development. In a statement posted on X, he said the Doha International Book Fair “reflects a firm national commitment to developing people and refining their intellectual capacities,” while stressing the importance of reading in rebuilding cultural and intellectual awareness within societies.

From the early hours of the second day, the exhibition halls witnessed heavy footfall from visitors representing different age groups and nationalities. Citizens, residents, and visitors from abroad crowded the pavilions searching for new releases, discounted collections, and specialized publications.

A Rich Cultural Programme

The accompanying cultural programme has emerged as one of the defining features of this year’s edition. Organizers scheduled 46 seminars on the main stage, alongside 46 dialogue sessions and 69 workshops covering literature, philosophy, media, translation, education, and social issues.

The cultural salon inside the fair hosts book launches and open discussions with authors and intellectuals, giving readers direct access to writers and researchers from Qatar and abroad. A new initiative titled “Reading Guide” has drawn significant attention from visitors. The sessions aim to help readers navigate the vast number of available titles and recommend books based on readers’ interests and backgrounds.

Recognition and Awards

The exhibition is also set to announce winners of the second edition of the Doha International Book Fair Award, which includes six categories supporting Qatari and international authors and publishers. Cultural observers view the initiative as an important step toward supporting creative production and encouraging the publishing industry.

The Qatari Authors Forum, operating under the Ministry of Culture, has maintained a prominent presence throughout the exhibition with dozens of intellectual events and discussions involving Qatari writers and researchers. The forum introduced more than 100 new publications by Qatari authors this year, alongside 25 intellectual seminars, 15 specialized lectures, and 12 panel discussions addressing current cultural and social issues.

Visitor Experiences

For many visitors, the fair represents a rare opportunity to access a large collection of books in one location while engaging directly with publishers and writers. Speaking to Qatar Tribune, visitor Ahmed Al Kuwari described the exhibition as “one of the most important annual cultural events in Qatar.” “The scale this year is extraordinary,” he said. “You can find books covering every field imaginable, from politics and literature to science and children’s education. The atmosphere encourages people to spend hours reading and exploring.”

Another visitor, Syrian resident Hanan Darwish, said the exhibition offered a valuable cultural experience for children and parents alike. “I brought my children because the activities designed for young readers are excellent,” she told Qatar Tribune. “There are storytelling sessions, interactive workshops, and educational spaces that make children excited about books and reading.”

Growing Interest in Books

Publishers said the strong attendance reflects rising public interest in books despite the dominance of digital media and online entertainment platforms. Several participating publishing houses reported high demand for literature, history, and self-development titles, while Arabic novels and translated works attracted significant attention from younger readers.

The participation of international publishers and cultural institutions has added further momentum to the exhibition, strengthening Doha’s status as a regional hub for intellectual dialogue and cultural exchange. The fair also provides an important commercial platform for publishers seeking to expand distribution networks across the Gulf region.

A Regional and Global Influence

Publishing representatives described the Doha exhibition as one of the fastest-growing book fairs in the Arab world in terms of participation and audience engagement. The presence of major media organizations and cultural institutions has further reinforced the exhibition’s regional visibility.

Inside the exhibition halls, that ambition becomes visible through the diversity of languages, ideas, and audiences moving through the space. Rows of publishing stands display everything from rare historical manuscripts and Islamic studies to contemporary fiction, philosophy, technology, and children’s literature.

As the exhibition continues over the coming days, organizers expect attendance figures to rise further, particularly during weekend evenings when families and students traditionally crowd the venue. With record participation, packed cultural programmes, and growing international presence, this year’s Doha International Book Fair has reinforced its position as one of the Gulf region’s leading cultural gatherings and a central pillar in Qatar’s expanding intellectual landscape.
