Drones Reshape Warfare on Ukraine's Eastern Front

In certain regions close to the disputed city of Kostyantynivka, troops currently remain for months confined to separate foxholes, as unmanned aircraft continuously monitor the skies, according to reports.BBC.

Trapped at the front

A Ukrainian soldier using the call sign Kenya remained in a frontline post for 225 days before successfully returning to his unit.

As reported by BBC from the Donbas area, officers tried multiple times to replace him, but drone monitoring made recovery operations almost impossible.

Kenya eventually covered a distance of 11 kilometers over the course of two days, steering clear of landmines and evading aerial drones as she withdrew from the frontline.

The region near Kostyantynivka continues to be one of the most fiercely disputed areas in eastern Ukraine, as Russian forces are said to have arrived at the city's edges.

War transformed

Soldiers speaking with the BBC mentioned that drones have become a major part of many conflicts, changing how traditional combat is conducted.

Major tank attacks and large-scale infantry advances have mostly been substituted by small teams that move swiftly over open areas, occasionally utilizing motorcycles, bicycles, or horses to remain undetected.

Soldiers use the term "kill-zone" to describe parts of the frontline—areas that are continuously watched by drones able to strike almost any visible movement.

"Most of the combat was carried out by drones," Kenya stated.

At night, Ukrainian troops are said to use anti-drone coverings meant to conceal their body heat from thermal cameras, although combatants claim the effectiveness is temporary.

Life underground

Even with developments in military technology, Ukrainian forces state that human soldiers are still crucial for maintaining control over areas.

Small groups remain in trenches, damaged structures, and underground areas near Russian forces to keep hold of disputed territory.

A different soldier, Khani, recounted living through the destruction of the building where his unit was taking cover, caused by Russian drones and artillery.

As Russian forces attempted to access the basement, Ukrainian defenders fired back, revealing their position and leading to additional assaults, such as explosive drones and suicide attacks.

Khani mentioned that a drone linked via a fiber-optic cable got entangled at the entrance, enabling him to shut it down before Russian forces tried to collapse the location with debris.

Harsh conditions

Ukrainian troops also reported significant lack of food, water, and essential supplies at the frontline.

Since numerous supply routes are monitored by drones, ammunition and food are frequently transported using aerial drones, although many shipments are said to encounter issues.

In the winter, certain soldiers faced temperatures as cold as -25C while resting in broken shelters with insufficient gear.

A soldier remembered a fellow combatant succumbing to hypothermia following an illness while at the frontline.
