The Mysterious Disappearance of Gandalf the Goose

In a quiet corner near Basted Millpond in Kent, a local legend has been left in turmoil after a beloved goose named Gandalf went missing. The incident has sparked widespread concern and outrage among residents, who are now on high alert to find out what happened to the bird.

Gandalf was last seen on Tuesday evening when a passerby claimed to have witnessed someone bundling the bird into the boot of a car around 7 p.m. Since then, there have been no leads or clues about his whereabouts, leaving the community in shock. As a result, the local landlord, Benjamin Mcconnachie, has decided to offer a £400 reward for any information that could lead to the arrest of the person responsible.

A Community in Distress

Benjamin, who has run The Plough pub in Basted for 13 years, expressed his deep concern over the incident. He described how much the geese meant to the community, saying, “Everyone loves those geese. People come from Borough Green, Platt, Crouch, and other villages to visit them, and bring their children.”

He emphasized that this is the first time such an event has occurred in the area, highlighting the unusual nature of the crime. “Nothing like this has ever happened before. It’s always been such a nice community. This has left everybody very sad and upset,” he added.

The Story of Gandalf

Gandalf, an Embden goose, mysteriously appeared at Basted Millpond two years ago. It is believed he was released by someone who could no longer care for him. Initially, he lived with a family of wild greylag geese, but when they flew away, he was left alone.

As a sociable creature, Gandalf seemed to be suffering from loneliness and was often seen looking miserable. To help him, a local couple bought him a companion named Ryan, inspired by the actor Ryan Gosling. The two became inseparable, but their bond was broken when Gandalf disappeared.

A Witness's Account

A driver who stopped in a lay-by in Basted Lane reported seeing a black estate car pull up by the pond and take Gandalf. Nigel Sheepwash, a villager, had left to pick up his wife from the train station at 6:50 p.m. and saw both geese in their usual spot. However, when he returned at 7:20 p.m., one of them was gone.

Nigel immediately raised the alarm, contacting the neighbors who looked after the geese. They called the police, and the search for Gandalf began. He recalled the moment he spoke to the van driver, who described seeing something fly out of the passenger window before the passenger got out. Unfortunately, he didn’t get the driver’s contact details, which he now regrets.

CCTV Evidence

Benjamin checked the pub’s CCTV footage and found an image of a dark-colored estate car speeding past at 7:01 p.m. The incident has triggered a wave of sadness and anger on social media, where villagers have taken it upon themselves to track down the culprits.

Many have shared the CCTV image on Facebook pages of neighboring villages, hoping someone might recognize the car. One resident, Julie Dervish, said, “We’re all very upset. I’m in my 50s now and live in Platt, but when my children were young, we used to visit Basted Mill all the time to see the wildlife.”

A New Addition to the Family

The couple who bought Ryan for Gandalf are worried about the impact of the loss on Ryan. To ease his loneliness, they traveled to Bournemouth and brought another goose, named Gengoose Khan, who has now been released at Basted Mill.

While the couple prefers to remain anonymous, one of them said, “If a driver had hit a goose and killed it, stopped, and done the right thing, we would have been sad, but not angry. But any deliberate act of violence against wildlife, as this seems to have been, is just deplorable.”

Ongoing Investigation

Kent Police are currently investigating the case. Basted Mill, once a paper mill dating back to 1750, was demolished in 1999 and later redeveloped into 29 houses by Crest housebuilders.

As the search for Gandalf continues, the community remains hopeful that the bird will be found and returned safely. For now, the mystery of what happened to Gandalf the goose remains unsolved, leaving many hearts heavy with worry.
