A Bold Political Stunt During the Unite the Kingdom March

During a recent Unite the Kingdom march in central London, a surprising and controversial act of political satire unfolded. The event, organized by Tommy Robinson—whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon—was intended to rally supporters under the banner of British identity and patriotism. However, it was disrupted by an unexpected intervention from the anti-Brexit group Led By Donkeys.

Led By Donkeys, a political campaign group founded in 2018 by four fathers with ties to Greenpeace, has a history of challenging far-right narratives through humor and subversion. This time, they executed a clever stunt that caught many marchers off guard.

The Electronic Screen That Changed the Narrative

The group managed to sneak an electronic screen into the march, which initially appeared to align with the day’s patriotic themes. As the screen displayed a Union Jack flag, it seemed to be part of the march's visual storytelling. But soon, pro-migration messages began to appear, disrupting the expected narrative.

One message read: “Immigration makes Britain brilliant.” This statement quickly drew attention from protesters, some of whom were taken aback by the sudden shift in content. The screen then featured a series of prominent British figures who had immigrant backgrounds, highlighting the diversity that defines the nation.

Celebrating Diversity Through Celebrity Endorsement

The video showcased several well-known individuals, including:

  • George Michael, whose father was a Cypriot immigrant
  • Mo Farah, the Olympic gold medallist born in Somalia
  • Dua Lipa, whose Kosovan Albanian parents moved to the UK in the 1990s
  • John Boyega, the Star Wars actor of Nigerian descent
  • Moeen Ali, the England cricketer with Kashmiri heritage
  • Idris Elba, the actor whose parents emigrated from Sierra Leone
  • Freddie Mercury, the Queen frontman with Indian Gujarati parents
  • Rita Ora, born in Kosovo
  • Jessica Ennis-Hill, the Olympian with Jamaican heritage
  • Nadiya Hussain, the Bake Off winner of Bangladeshi descent
  • Sir Ben Kingsley, the British Indian actor
  • Jude Bellingham, the Real Madrid star with Kenyan heritage

As these names appeared on the screen, more protesters realized what was happening, leading to a wave of jeers and anger.

A Message of Unity and Inclusion

The final message on the screen read: “If you go back far enough… We’re all immigrants.” This powerful statement was accompanied by images of various famous Brits, including Queen Elizabeth II, Harry Kane, and Winston Churchill. At this point, police officers stepped in, attempting to manage the growing tension.

A man could be heard shouting, “Smash it up!” as the screen continued to display the diverse faces of British society. Eventually, the screen returned to showing the Union Jack, but not before delivering a final message: “Stay hydrated.”

The Broader Context of the Protest

This incident took place against the backdrop of a larger protest scene. The Metropolitan Police deployed around 4,000 officers to manage the event, alongside counter-demonstrations from groups like Stand Up To Racism. The FA Cup final at Wembley also saw increased security due to the heightened tensions.

Before the speeches, the crowd waved flags with pro-Trump slogans and “Jesus is the way of life” signs. A strong smell of cannabis was noted, and many attendees appeared to be under the influence of alcohol.

Tommy Robinson addressed the crowd, urging them to join political parties such as Reform, Restore, or the Conservative Party. He received applause when he mentioned Donald Trump, but his mention of embattled Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer was met with loud boos.

Aftermath and Reactions

In a statement, the Met reported 43 arrests at the two protests and an additional 22 at the FA Cup Final. Four officers were assaulted, though none seriously, and six others faced hate crime offenses. London mayor Sadiq Khan praised the police for their efforts and made a pointed comment about rejecting those who seek to divide communities.
