A Satirical Stunt During the Unite the Kingdom March

During a recent Unite the Kingdom march in central London, a group known as Led By Donkeys launched a bold and unexpected satirical stunt. The anti-Brexit political campaign group, founded in 2018 by four fathers with ties to Greenpeace, managed to insert an electronic screen into the event that displayed pro-migrant messages. This move was intended to challenge the anti-immigrant rhetoric of the march's organizer, Tommy Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon.

The march, which drew an estimated 60,000 participants, was organized by Robinson, who urged attendees to prepare for what he called the “battle of Britain” on Parliament Square. However, unbeknownst to many, the group had planned a counter-demonstration that would provoke a strong reaction from the crowd.

The Electronic Screen and Its Message

The electronic screen appeared to align with the patriotic themes of the day, initially displaying a Union Jack flag without drawing much attention. As the event progressed, the screen began to project messages that contradicted the march’s stance, such as “Immigration makes Britain brilliant.” This statement sparked surprise among several protesters, especially when the word “brilliant” repeatedly flashed on the screen.

The video showcased a series of British celebrities with foreign heritage, including the late singer George Michael, Olympic gold medallist Mo Farah, and singer Dua Lipa. These appearances were designed to highlight the contributions of immigrants to British culture and society.

Celebrities and the Message of Unity

As more celebrities were featured on the screen, including Star Wars actor John Boyega, England cricketer Moeen Ali, and actor Idris Elba, the crowd began to realize the true purpose of the display. The screen continued to show other notable figures, such as Queen frontman Freddie Mercury, singer Rita Ora, and Bake Off winner Nadiya Hussain. Each of these individuals had a unique story of migration or heritage that contributed to their success in the UK.

The message on the screen eventually concluded with the phrase “If you go back far enough… We’re all immigrants.” This statement was accompanied by images of various famous Brits, including Queen Elizabeth II, Harry Kane, and Winston Churchill, reinforcing the idea that diversity has always been a part of British identity.

The Crowd’s Reaction and Police Involvement

As the crowd’s outrage grew, some protesters began to jeer and chant “off,” demanding that the screen be turned off. Despite the police presence, officers struggled to switch off the screen, leading to further tension among the demonstrators. Eventually, the screen returned to displaying the Union Jack, but not before it delivered a final message: “Stay hydrated.”

This message lasted for several seconds before the original pro-migrant message reappeared, marking the end of the video recording. It remains unclear how long the screen remained active before being switched off.

The Broader Context of the Event

The Unite the Kingdom march was not only a demonstration of anti-immigrant sentiment but also a platform for political messaging. Before the speeches, crowds waved flags with pro-Trump slogans and “Jesus is the way of life.” A strong smell of cannabis was reported, and many attendees appeared to be under the influence of alcohol.

Tommy Robinson addressed the crowd, encouraging them to join political parties such as Reform, Restore, or the Conservative Party. He received applause for photos of Donald Trump, but his mention of embattled Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer was met with loud boos.

In a statement, the Metropolitan Police reported 43 arrests at the two protests and an additional 22 at the FA Cup Final. Four officers were assaulted, and six others were subjected to hate crime offenses. London mayor Sadiq Khan praised the efforts of the police and criticized the divisive nature of the march, stating that Londoners will always reject those who seek to divide communities.
