Chaos at Kansas High School Graduations
A graduation ceremony at a high school in Kansas turned into a scene of confusion and controversy when a teacher's actions disrupted the moment of celebration for students. At Wichita High School East, the event on May 20 saw students being forced into awkward handshakes with an administrator as they crossed the stage to receive their diplomas.
The incident involved a school official who was seen grabbing students Key Henderson and Serena Gomez during the ceremony. The first encounter happened when Henderson walked past the administrator without stopping. The staff member refused to let him go until he shook his hand before handing him a piece of paper.
Later that day, Serena Gomez was also grabbed by the same administrator as she celebrated on stage. As she raised her hands in the air, the official seized her wrist and forced her into a handshake before giving her a card. Gomez expressed her disappointment, stating that the administrator's actions ruined her moment and were unnecessary.

The video of the event quickly went viral, sparking mixed reactions online. Some viewers criticized the administrator for being overly aggressive, while others believed he was simply trying to ensure every student received a handshake and a card. In response, Wichita Public Schools issued a statement defending the administrator, claiming that the students' on-stage celebrations violated graduation policies.
"The school has clear expectations shared with students before the graduation ceremony to ensure all 500 students cross the stage in a timely manner so everyone can have their moment to celebrate," the statement said.
This incident occurred just days after another chaotic event at South High School's graduation on May 21. The ceremony, held at Wichita State University (WSU), turned into a scene of violence when around ten students and teenagers got into fights on campus.

According to reports, the fight took place after most attendees had left Koch Arena, where the graduation was held earlier in the evening. Wichita State University officers responded to the altercation, using pepper spray to disperse the group. The incident was brief, with no arrests or injuries reported.
This is not the first time such incidents have occurred in the area. Just weeks prior, a fight broke out at Chester Lewis Learning Academy's commencement ceremony within the same school district. Terrii Moses, Director of Safety and Environmental Services for Wichita Public Schools, commented on the previous incident, noting that large gatherings can lead to conflicts.
"Anytime you have a large number of people together, there's an opportunity for people who don't get along," Moses said. "Indoor events are easier to manage, but when you release everyone at once, you have the chance for interactions that may not be positive."
Moses added that the school district ensures appropriate staffing for all graduations and conducts debriefings with partners to improve security measures.
These incidents highlight the challenges schools face in managing large events and ensuring the safety of students and attendees. While celebrations are meant to be joyous occasions, unexpected disruptions can turn moments of pride into sources of distress for students and families alike.
