A New Era of Track Performance with the McMurtry Spéirling Pure

The McMurtry Spéirling Pure is a groundbreaking electric hypercar that redefines what's possible on the track. With an impressive 1,000 horsepower and a 100-kilowatt-hour battery pack, this vehicle is designed for extreme performance rather than daily commuting. It features a unique fan system that generates up to 2,000 kg of downforce, ensuring maximum grip at any speed. However, it’s important to note that the Spéirling Pure is not street-legal, making it a dedicated track machine.

The Price of Performance

Priced at $1.36 million before taxes and customizations, the Spéirling Pure is an exclusive offering. Only 99 units will be produced, making it one of the rarest vehicles in the automotive world. This high price tag reflects the cutting-edge technology and engineering that went into its creation.

Evolution from Prototype to Production

When McMurtry first unveiled the Spéirling prototype in 2021, it was a sight to behold. The car made its debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, where it raced up the hill, capturing the attention of enthusiasts and critics alike. Fast forward five years, and the finished product has arrived. The production model has undergone significant changes compared to the original prototype.

  • The wheelbase has increased from 2 meters (78.7 inches) to 2.2 meters (86.6 inches) to accommodate a larger battery.
  • The overall dimensions have grown by 14% in width and 11% in length.
  • McMurtry claims that the production car is 95% new compared to the prototypes, indicating a near-total rework of the design.

Power and Performance

The Spéirling Pure is equipped with a 100-kilowatt-hour battery pack, which is expected to provide enough energy for up to 50 km (31 miles) at Le Mans Prototype 2 race car pace. While there are no official WLTP or EPA range estimates due to its lack of road legality, McMurtry previously mentioned that it could handle around 480 km (300 miles) of normal on-road driving.

Charging the battery from 20% to 95% can take between 20 and 60 minutes, depending on charger output, ambient temperature, and battery temperature. The larger battery and overall size have increased the vehicle's weight, now standing at 1,350 kg (2,980 lbs), compared to the original 60 kWh prototype's 1,050 kg (2,315 lbs).

With 1,000 horsepower directed to the rear wheels, the Spéirling Pure boasts a top speed of 305 km/h (190 mph). Its unique fan system allows it to generate up to 2,000 kg of downforce on demand, even while stationary. The skirts that create this downforce can be retracted when not needed, and the car has an onboard air compressor to facilitate this process.

Fan System Enhancements

The fan system has been significantly updated. It now features two fans for redundancy, along with new motors, blades, revised cooling, and a relocated fan assembly. This system enables the vehicle to pull up to 3g through the corners and under braking, enhancing its performance capabilities.

Additional Features and Design Changes

Other notable changes include:

  • The vehicle rides 20% higher than the prototype.
  • Wider tires with more sidewall provide improved stability.
  • A small stowage compartment under the rear spoiler can hold a helmet and minimal items.
  • Headlights and taillights, complete with blinkers and hazards, have been added.
  • The seat is molded to the owner’s body for a perfect fit, accommodating drivers up to 201 cm (6 ft 7 in) tall.

Track-Only Use and Future Plans

While the Spéirling Pure is not suitable for street use, it is eligible for Global Time Attack in the U.S. and European Time Attack Masters at the Nürburgring. McMurtry suggests that owners can run the vehicle with just a driver and “a competent friend,” though the company offers additional services for those who prefer a hassle-free experience.

For tracks without suitable charging facilities, McMurtry will sell owners a portable 100-kWh supplementary "powerbank" with 120 kW charging power.

Although the company has expressed interest in producing a road-going variant, no timeline has been provided for its release. For now, the Spéirling Pure remains a dedicated track machine, pushing the boundaries of electric performance.
