The G7 Leaders’ Summit, held under the French Presidency this year, faced numerous challenges that could have derailed its success. From ongoing global conflicts and disrupted trade routes to energy crises and health emergencies, the world was at a crossroads. Despite these complexities, the summit in Evian-les-Bains proved to be a rare moment of unity among global leaders. Through meaningful discussions, the G7 achieved genuine cooperation and made concrete commitments to tackle pressing global issues.
This outcome was not accidental but the result of meticulous coordination between G7 member states and key partner countries, including India, Brazil, Egypt, Kenya, and South Korea. Additionally, Ukraine, the UAE, and Qatar were invited to contribute their perspectives. For the first time, the French Presidency involved these partner nations throughout the entire preparatory process leading up to the summit, highlighting the importance of inclusive dialogue.
India's role in the G7+ has been significant, with its engagement dating back to 2003 when it was first invited by France. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s participation this year marked his 13th appearance at the G7, and his seventh consecutive attendance since 2019. India’s contributions were particularly crucial in addressing global health and digital technology challenges. The summit resulted in nine unanimous declarations, many of which received support from partner countries.
Key Outcomes of the G7 Leaders’ Summit
-
Support for Ukraine: The G7 reaffirmed its commitment to Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. Leaders praised the country’s resilience and progress on the battlefield, emphasizing the need for a just and lasting resolution to the conflict.
-
West Asia Developments: The agreement between the US and Iran regarding the Strait of Hormuz was welcomed. The summit also called for an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon, although the situation remains dynamic and requires close monitoring.
-
Economic Cooperation: Leaders emphasized the importance of balanced growth and coordinated economic policies. They recognized the need to protect industries and jobs while avoiding future trade wars and financial crises. The French Presidency engaged China in a virtual meeting before the summit, marking a significant step in Sino-French relations.
-
Digital Technology and AI: Following the India AI Impact Summit, G7+ leaders agreed to enhance online protection for children. A common platform for cooperation between democracies facing AI security risks will be established, with collaboration from leading companies to ensure safe and beneficial AI deployment.
-
Health Initiatives: The summit demonstrated strong support for populations affected by the Ebola virus, with over one billion dollars in funding pledged. It also marked the first-ever G7 text on combating cancer, reflecting a unified approach to global health challenges.
-
International Solidarity: Leaders reaffirmed the importance of international solidarity, especially for vulnerable populations. Initiatives like Finance in Common, led by the French Development Agency (AFD), aim to mobilize private financing for development.
-
Critical Mineral Value Chains: A total of 195 projects worth €64 billion were announced to strengthen critical mineral value chains and reduce global dependencies.
-
Security Collaboration: Two statements were adopted on tackling drug trafficking and migrant smuggling. A G7+ Ports Network is planned to improve coordination in these areas.
Looking Ahead
Several ministerial and working group meetings are scheduled for 2026 to advance these initiatives. India will play a pivotal role in these efforts, given its position as BRICS chair. Alongside the US, as G20 Chair, India is well-placed to drive forward concrete actions on global challenges. In an era where coordination and constructive engagement are more critical than ever, the G7 Leaders’ Summit has set a positive precedent for international cooperation.
