Introduction to AfriCHEG: A New Era for African Health Systems
African countries are on the brink of a transformative shift in their healthcare landscape. With the recent launch of the African Centre of Excellence in Health Economics and Governance (AfriCHEG), there is now a dedicated platform aimed at strengthening health systems, improving health financing, and accelerating progress toward Universal Health Coverage (UHC). This initiative, launched by the Eastern and Southern Africa Management Institute (ESAMI) in Arusha, marks a significant step forward in addressing long-standing challenges within the continent's healthcare sector.

The new centre will focus on several key areas, including:

According to ESAMI Director General Prof Peter Kiuluku, the establishment of AfriCHEG aims to bridge the gap between research and implementation. “Our vision is to position AfriCHEG as a leading centre of excellence in Africa for health economics, governance, executive education, applied research and policy advisory services,” he stated.
Prof Kiuluku emphasized that the success of African health systems will not only depend on building more hospitals or increasing the number of health workers but also on the quality of governance, strategic planning, efficient use of resources, and evidence-based decision-making.
Training Programmes and Skills Development
AfriCHEG will introduce training programmes designed to equip professionals with practical skills in various areas, including:
- Artificial Intelligence (AI) in health data analysis: Utilizing AI to analyze health data for better insights and decision-making.
- Financial tracking within health systems: Ensuring transparency and accountability in financial management.
- Procurement management: Improving the efficiency of medicine and medical supply procurement.
- Monitoring and evaluation of health programmes: Assessing the impact of health initiatives to ensure they meet their goals.
These programmes aim to enhance the efficient use of limited health resources while promoting sustainable health systems.
Collaboration and Partnerships
AfriCHEG will serve as a platform for collaboration among governments, universities, research institutions, the private sector, and development partners. AfriCHEG Coordinator Prof Urbanus Kioko highlighted the importance of close collaboration among African governments, academic institutions, research organizations, and the private sector. “Governments cannot address these challenges alone. This centre will therefore strengthen the capacity of African countries to plan, manage and improve health systems more effectively,” he said.
International Cooperation and Knowledge Exchange
International cooperation will be a key pillar of AfriCHEG’s success, according to Mr Hari Murthy, CEO of Velocity Project Management Ltd. He noted that the centre will benefit from India’s experience in digital health and universal health coverage implementation while promoting Africa-led innovation.
This partnership is expected to foster joint research, knowledge exchange, and the adoption of affordable health technologies, ultimately contributing to the development of equitable, efficient, and sustainable health systems across the continent.
