Tragedy at Six Flags: Teacher Dies in Roller Coaster Incident Amid Calls for Transparency

A heartbreaking incident at Six Flags Over Georgia has left the community in mourning and raised urgent questions about safety protocols at major amusement parks. Hassan Kariem, a 42-year-old education technology professional at Wesley International Academy, lost his life in a sudden and devastating accident on Monday while riding the Goliath roller coaster in Austell, Georgia. The tragedy unfolded during what was meant to be a joyful family celebration—Kariem was at the park to honor the 13th birthday of his fiancĂ©e’s niece.

According to Joshua Nelson, Kariem’s future brother-in-law, the teacher’s final moments were spent with the young girl he was celebrating. “His final moments and words were with her,” Nelson shared in an emotional interview with CNN. He recounted how his niece called him in tears after the ride ended, saying that Mr. Hassan had fallen from the roller coaster. The account sent shockwaves through the family and sparked widespread grief across social media platforms.

Witnesses described a harrowing scene: Kariem was thrown from his seat during the high-speed descent, flying over other passengers before crashing into the metal structure of the Goliath ride. Multiple impacts occurred before he fell to the ground below. Bloodstains were found scattered around the area, leaving several bystanders traumatized. Footage and images of the incident—showing Kariem’s body tumbling headfirst into the ride’s frame—have since gone viral, prompting an outpouring of public sympathy and concern.

Despite the gravity of the situation, Six Flags has remained largely silent on the specifics of the accident. The company released a brief statement expressing sorrow and condolences: “We are deeply saddened by the guest incident at our park today. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the guest’s family, friends, and loved ones.” The statement added that the park team and local authorities responded immediately and are fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation.

However, this lack of detailed communication has drawn sharp criticism from crisis management expert Marsha Archer, who has spent nearly two decades advising organizations through public emergencies. She emphasized the importance of leadership stepping forward to address the public and, more critically, the grieving family.

“Someone human has to step up to the plate and start answering those questions,” Archer said in an interview with WGRZ.
“I think the next steps is that someone from leadership, ideally that would be the president and CEO John Riley, would step up and say something. The first and most important audience to address is the family of Hassan Kariem.”

Archer urged Six Flags to provide regular updates via press releases, social media, and public statements—not just once, but consistently throughout the investigation. She also stressed the need for internal communication: employees should be informed about the incident so they can respond truthfully and compassionately to guests’ inquiries.

In response to the tragedy, a wave of precautionary closures has swept across North America. Eleven roller coasters have been temporarily shut down as a safety measure, including:

  • Goliath – Six Flags Over Georgia (closed indefinitely)
  • Goliath – Six Flags Magic Mountain, California (shut down)
  • Raging Bull – Six Flags Great America, Illinois
  • Nitro – Six Flags Great Adventure, New Jersey
  • Leviathan & Behemoth – Canada’s Wonderland, Ontario
  • Fury 325 & Thunder Striker – Carowinds, North and South Carolina
  • Orion & Diamondback – Kings Island, Ohio
  • Mako – SeaWorld Orlando

Six Flags spokesperson Sara Gorgon confirmed the closures in a statement to the Daily Mail, stating: “Out of an abundance of caution, we have temporarily closed similar attractions across our parks. The safety of our guests and team members is our highest priority.”

The closure of these rides—many of which are among the most iconic and heavily used in the region—has caused significant disruption to visitors and park operations. Yet, many experts agree that the move, while costly, is necessary to maintain public trust and demonstrate accountability.

As the investigation continues, Kariem’s family has made a heartfelt plea: “Please stop sharing the photos. We’re trying to grieve in peace.” Their request underscores the delicate balance between public awareness and personal dignity during times of national tragedy.

With calls growing louder for transparency, the spotlight remains firmly on Six Flags leadership to act not only with compassion but with clarity. The world is watching—not just to learn what happened, but to see whether a corporate giant will finally take responsibility when lives are at stake.
