What's in store for Magic Round 2027?

The Magic Round's Evolution and Future
Magic Round has become a staple of the National Rugby League (NRL) calendar, drawing fans from all over Queensland and beyond. With its success consistently proven year after year, it's no surprise that the NRL has extended its partnership with the Queensland government through to 2032. The event has grown into a major attraction, showcasing both men's and women's rugby league in a vibrant celebration of the sport.
In the early years of Magic Round, a Thursday night game for the men was introduced, but this format has not been repeated since. Instead, the women's State of Origin series opener has taken on a more prominent role in launching the festivities. However, as the landscape of the NRL changes, so too may the structure of Magic Round.
Changes Looming for 2027
The upcoming season will see a shift in how Magic Round is organized. A nine-game slate of men's NRL games is set to be introduced, along with the addition of the Perth Bears, which will bring the total number of teams to 18. This expansion means each round will no longer have a bye, necessitating a reevaluation of the schedule.
Australian Rugby League Commission Chairman Peter V'Landys has suggested that the time may be right for the women's Origin series to step away from Magic Round. He emphasized the need for the women's game to establish its own identity and space, particularly with the new teams joining the competition. "They have already shown how great they are and how far advanced they are compared to any other women's sport," he stated.
This potential shift raises questions about the future of the women's Origin match within Magic Round. Currently, the women's Origin is played before the start of the women's season, which may affect the overall quality of the concept. There is a growing argument for moving the women's Origin match to a different time, even if it means there could be less female influence on the on-field action during the NRL's biggest weekend of the regular season.
Planning for the Future
Despite these considerations, there is currently no official chatter about the structure of Magic Round in 2027. The NRL has not yet confirmed whether the Thursday evening game will return or if alternative arrangements will be made.
When the Thursday evening game was last used for Magic Round, it did not perform well. The crowd was sparse, with many travelers arriving only on Friday. The fear is that a similar situation could occur if the format returns in 2027.
One possible solution is to take the Brisbane Broncos game out of the rest of the weekend, making it a standalone Thursday game. This approach would rely on enough people traveling to ensure the rest of the weekend remains filled at Suncorp Stadium. With several Queensland-based teams still playing throughout the weekend, including the Dolphins, Titans, Cowboys, Storm, and Warriors, there is still a strong local audience to support the event.
Alternative Options
If the NRL decides against a Thursday night men's game, there are two potential alternatives. One option is to add a fourth match to the Saturday slate, starting around 1pm. This could lead to a slight reduction in crowd size for Game 1, as well as a potential drop in TV viewership due to people in Brisbane being at pubs for lunch and others elsewhere having plans.
Another option is to move the entire weekend to a different time, such as the Labour Day weekend in early May, the King’s Birthday weekend (which is not observed in Queensland in the same June timeframe as New South Wales), or even the Easter weekend. This would allow for public holidays to be utilized, ensuring games can be played without the need for a standalone Thursday game or four matches on the same day.
However, neither of these options seems to be the likely path forward. It appears that a Thursday night game will be necessary for Magic Round in 2027.
Ensuring Success
While the challenges ahead are clear, Magic Round has come a long way since its inception in 2019. The event has proven its ability to attract large crowds and create an electric atmosphere. With careful planning and adjustments, it is hoped that Magic Round will continue to thrive, maintaining its status as one of the most anticipated events on the NRL calendar.
