In the face of numerous defectors joining the Social Democratic Party (SDP), the party’s presidential nominee for the 2023 elections, Prince Adewole Adebayo, stated that the SDP is not a sanctuary for disheartened politicians or those who have been forced from their homes due to internal displacement.
He stressed that the party continues to be a movement led by youth and women in Nigeria who seek genuine transformation.
Adebayan pointed out that it is typical for unhappy people to look for options elsewhere when they think they might find a better stage to express themselves.
He emphasized that the initial cohort of discontented individuals who opted for the SDP consists primarily of Nigeria’s impoverished populace. As he explained, "When discussing issues like hunger, unemployment, insecurity, and increasing living costs, along with various societal challenges, these problems affect ordinary citizens far more severely than they do the elites."
He guaranteed that the party would stop those trying to enter merely for their own ambitions.
He stated: "It's not our place to question why individuals come here. Just as a political party serves the public, so do places of worship such as churches or mosques. If someone attends a mosque with the intention to pray, we shouldn’t interrogate their past actions by asking, 'What did you do last night? What have you done up until now?' Instead, let them engage in prayer."

You have the right to pray. In contrast, going to a mosque for prayer won’t automatically make you the Chief Imam. Similarly, attending a church to pray doesn’t guarantee you’ll become a bishop; however, you're welcome to join since churches are accessible to all.

Adebayo lamented how some people covertly exploit the system, yet he remains hopeful about positive changes in politics.
“Many of those who worked closely with Professor Mahmood Yakubu at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in 2023 are no longer there. Integrity is key, and the law must take its full course. The SDP’s message is clear—we stand for the people. We are not just another big-name political party; we are a movement driven by young people and women who want real change,” he said.
He went on to say that the SDP is highly organized and targeted, emphasizing that discipline and integrity are key principles of the party.
He recommended that new members leave their egos aside and follow the party’s regulations.
He stated: "To oust someone currently in office, you need greater discipline than they possess. Should you succumb to internal disputes and lack seriousness, you provide opportunities that the governing party will surely take advantage of, and you cannot hold them accountable for doing so."
"This is the type of mindset we embrace in the SDP. Upon joining, set aside your ego. Set aside your ambitions. And leave all your personal issues at the entrance," he stated.
He pointed out that the SDP doesn’t have any personal conflicts with President Tinubu; instead, their concerns stem from the mismanagement evident in his administration.
"If governance fails, it works counter to the interests of the Nigerian people, their wellbeing, and safety. This goes against Chapter 2 of the Constitution, breaches your oath of office, and we will hold you accountable for this reason. We have no interest in your private matters," he stated.
