San Antonio's vibrant culinary landscape boasts numerous restaurant groups steadily expanding their influence across the city. However, Chef Jennifer Hwa Dobbertin, a celebrated local talent and recent James Beard Award nominee, is quietly building her own impressive culinary presence. While she might not describe it as an "empire," her growing portfolio speaks volumes.

Dobbertin, the driving force behind the acclaimed Best Quality Daughter, recently shared insights into her future plans during an interview. Over tacos at La Gardenia, she hinted at the possibility of a few more ventures in San Antonio. The first of these, announced earlier this year, is a new bar-restaurant concept called Jue Let, named in honor of the Chinese chef who inspired James Beard.

Dobbertin envisions a measured approach to expansion. "Maybe three years after [Jue Let's launch], I'll consider one last go," she stated. While acknowledging the success of operators who launch multiple establishments in quick succession, she prefers a more deliberate pace, aiming for a new project approximately every three years.

Her track record suggests this approach is highly effective. In 2020, Dobbertin opened Best Quality Daughter, a highly regarded Asian American restaurant located in The Pearl. This followed the 2017 launch of Tenko Ramen, a popular spot within the Pearl Bottling Department (which closed its doors in 2022).

Best Quality Daughter has garnered significant acclaim, including recognition as a USA Today Best New Restaurant. The restaurant has also attracted celebrity diners, such as Sandra Oh, and earned Dobbertin a James Beard Award nomination for "Best Chef: Texas" in 2025.

Dobbertin's rising star in the culinary world also led to an exciting collaboration with Taco Bell. She developed a limited-release menu item featuring grilled chicken, a noodle-nest tostada, Thai basil, ranch, sour cream, onion, and cilantro.

During the interview, Dobbertin also recounted the surprising moment she learned of her James Beard nomination while in an airport restroom. She also expressed feeling somewhat "late" to the San Antonio food scene. Dobbertin transitioned to the culinary arts from a career in nonprofit management at the age of 28. However, she sees this career change as a return to her roots, having grown up with parents who worked in the restaurant industry.
