This recipe for Johnny Marzetti casserole is one of my favorites. It’s not only hearty, but it’s literally the perfect comfort food! Every time it’s made for dinner, the kids are asking for seconds.
The best part about this Johnny Marzetti goulash is that even after seconds there are usually leftovers to enjoy the next day. I swear that this reheats to perfection and tastes just like it was made fresh – maybe even better!
Pair this simple pasta dish up with a side salad or a steamed veggie and you’ve got a full and delicious meal perfect for busy weeknights. I also love bringing it to a potluck dinner. It always gets compliments!
π§Ύ Ingredients Needed
Most of the ingredients that are listed below are ones that you already have in your fridge/freezer and pantry. Delicious doesn’t have to be difficult!
- penne pasta – You can use other pasta if you find you don’t have this type.
- ground beef – I always opt for lean ground beef for my recipes.
- onion – Use a sweeter onion for flavor and chop it up well.
- bell pepper – Slice it thin and remove the seeds.
- white mushrooms – Clean them well and chop them up! Ital
- diced tomatoes – Canned or fresh will work.
- tomato sauce – Canned is the fastest!
- garlic powder
- Italian seasoning
- Salt and black pepper, as desired
- sharp cheddar cheese – I love this type of cheese but again, you can use what you’d like.

There are a few things that you can swap out if you’re running low on some of the ingredients. It will alter the recipe some but still give an amazing flavor and taste.
- Canned mushrooms
- Fresh tomatoes
- A different type of shredded cheese – colby, mozzarella, pepperjack, etc.

To make this easy casserole recipe, you’ll want to have the following equipment on hand.

π₯£ How to Make
Before starting preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Prepare a 9×13 baking dish with nonstick cooking spray.
While you’re doing that, cook pasta according to package directions. Do not overcook as the pasta will continue cooking in the oven. Drain well.
STEP 1: In a large (12 inch) skillet or dutch oven, brown the ground beef with the onions and bell peppers, crumbling the beef as it cooks, until the meat is no longer pink. Add the mushrooms and continue cooking until the mushrooms are softened. Drain well and then return the mixture to the skillet.
STEP 2: To the meat and vegetables, add the tomatoes, tomato sauce, and seasonings. Cook over medium heat for 10 minutes.
Add this mixture to the pasta in the pasta pot. Stir in half of the cheese.
STEP 3: Transfer to the prepared baking dish. Cover with aluminum foil. Place in oven to bake.
STEP 4: After 30 minutes, remove the aluminum foil and top with the remaining cheese. Continue baking for 10 minutes or until the cheese has melted.

- 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
- Salt and black pepper as desired
- 3 cups sharp cheddar cheese
Instructions
