Precision TVET: DTI & KTI Forge Alliance

Strengthening Ghana's TVET Sector Through Precision Quality Collaboration

A significant partnership between the Design and Technology Institute (DTI) and the Kumasi Technical Institute (KTI) has been launched, signaling a new era for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in Ghana. This strategic collaboration, known as the Precision Quality initiative, aims to bolster the TVET sector and significantly improve employment prospects for young Ghanaians.

The core objective of this collaboration is to instill precision quality standards throughout both institutions, aligning skills training programs with the specific demands of various industries. This alignment is achieved through the development and integration of a competency-based curriculum into existing formal training programs. The new curriculum is designed to equip students with practical, industry-relevant skills that are immediately applicable in the workforce.

Retooling for Enhanced Learning and Teaching

As a tangible demonstration of its commitment, DTI has undertaken a comprehensive retooling of several key departments at KTI. These departments include Carpentry, Upholstery, Fashion Design, and Welding and Fabrication. This upgrade encompasses not only new equipment and tools but also a modernized learning environment designed to enhance both teaching methodologies and learning outcomes. The improved facilities are expected to significantly improve the delivery of the new competency-based curriculum.

Constance Swaniker, Founder and President of DTI, emphasized the importance of these improvements in embedding the principles of precision quality into KTI’s academic environment. She believes that this will ultimately contribute to the national agenda of improving youth employability.

"These upgrades will not only benefit KTI's extensive student body of over 4,000 individuals," Ms. Swaniker stated, "but will also serve DTI Precision Quality interns, trainees from other institutions, and unemployed youth within the surrounding communities." This highlights the far-reaching impact of the initiative beyond the immediate beneficiaries at KTI.

Ms. Swaniker also stressed the critical role of infrastructure in achieving quality education, particularly within TVET institutions. "As TVET institutions, if you do not have adequate resources and up-to-date equipment, the quality of teaching and learning is inevitably compromised," she explained. The investment in infrastructure is therefore seen as a fundamental step towards ensuring the success of the Precision Quality initiative.

The initiative is grounded in global best practices, utilizes cutting-edge equipment, and incorporates industry-aligned training methodologies. This holistic approach is intended to set a new benchmark for innovation and workforce readiness within the country.

A Commitment to Excellence and Continuous Improvement

Gabriel Kingsford Osei, Principal of KTI, expressed profound gratitude to DTI for its invaluable support. He emphasized that the retooled departments will play a crucial role in equipping students with the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in the competitive job market.

"Precision quality is not merely a concept; it represents a firm commitment to doing things right the first time, every time," Mr. Osei explained. "It embodies a mindset built on consistency, discipline, and a dedication to continuous improvement – qualities that define successful professionals and resilient institutions."

He further noted that the students graduating from the enhanced programs will not only possess technical expertise but will also develop essential communication skills, creativity, and the confidence needed to excel in any professional setting. The emphasis on these soft skills is crucial for ensuring that graduates are well-rounded and prepared to adapt to the evolving demands of the modern workplace.

A Model for TVET Revitalization

The Precision Quality collaboration represents a promising and innovative model for revitalizing Ghana's TVET system. By focusing on industry alignment, competency-based training, and continuous improvement, the initiative aims to foster a more skilled, innovative, and employment-ready workforce. This collaboration serves as an example of how strategic partnerships between educational institutions and industry leaders can drive positive change and contribute to the economic development of the nation. The long-term success of the Precision Quality initiative will depend on continued collaboration, investment in resources, and a steadfast commitment to excellence in TVET.
