The Uganda National Examinations Board (Uneb) has issued a directive to all schools across the nation, mandating the public display of candidate registers in preparation for the upcoming national examinations slated to begin next month. This measure is intended to ensure accuracy and provide ample time for candidates to adequately prepare.
Verification of Candidate Information
Uneb spokesperson, Ms. Jenifer Kalule, emphasized the importance of this exercise, stating that schools are required to prominently display the registers on noticeboards accessible to both parents and candidates. This allows for thorough verification of crucial details.
"We urge parents, candidates, and all concerned parties to meticulously confirm the registration status of each candidate," Ms. Kalule stated. "This includes verifying the correct spelling of names, ensuring the accuracy of photographs attached to candidate details, checking the order of names, and confirming the date of birth." She further emphasized that this verification process is a legal requirement, underscoring its significance.
Focus on Subject Selection and New Curriculum Grading
Ms. Kalule also urged schools and parents to pay close attention to the subjects for which candidates are preparing, particularly in light of the new curriculum grading system being implemented for secondary school examinations. Understanding the grading mechanics is crucial for optimal performance.
Ministry's Guidance on Student Well-being
Dr. Dennis Mugimba, spokesperson for the Ministry of Education and Sports, cautioned schools against overburdening students with excessive workload as they approach their final examinations. "As we enter the third term, which marks the culmination of the academic cycle for these candidates, we wish them the best in their preparations," Dr. Mugimba stated. "It is vital that students are not stressed with excessive work, as this can negatively impact their readiness for the final examinations." The Ministry emphasizes a balanced approach to preparation, prioritizing student well-being.
Addressing the Issue of School Fees
Dr. Mugimba also addressed the sensitive issue of school fees, advising school administrators against preventing students with outstanding fees from sitting for examinations. While acknowledging the obligation of parents to pay fees, especially in private schools, he stressed the importance of compassion.
"If a parent is unable to pay the full required fees and the child is already registered, it is a humane gesture for the head teacher to arrange with the parents to allow the candidate to sit for the examinations," Dr. Mugimba explained. He suggested that schools can coordinate with Uneb to withhold results until outstanding fees are settled. "This approach is preferable to denying a child the opportunity to participate in examinations," he affirmed.
Utilizing Uneb Resources for Effective Preparation
Ms. Kalule recommended that students and schools leverage the resources provided by Uneb, including printed booklets, especially those related to the new curriculum. These materials offer valuable insights into the types of examination questions and the assessment methods employed.
"The guidance provided by teachers is undoubtedly valuable," Ms. Kalule noted. "However, at this stage, students need to concentrate, revise their notes, actively listen to their teachers, engage in extensive reading, and cultivate critical thinking skills. The examinations are rapidly approaching, with the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) exams commencing on October 10."
Candidate Statistics and Examination Timetable
Uneb reports a significant increase in the total number of candidates registered for national examinations this year. A total of 1,416,307 candidates are registered across all examination levels, compared to 1,319,139 candidates last year.
- Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE): 817,998 candidates
- Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE): 431,856 candidates
- Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE): 166,464 candidates
Ms. Kalule confirmed that Uneb will release the official examination timetable shortly, providing further details on the scheduling of specific papers.
