KFC Unveils Immersive "Hawkins Fried Chicken" Pop-Up in Sydney's Abandoned Train Station

Fast food giant KFC is set to transport fans to the eerie, nostalgic world of 1980s Hawkins, Indiana, with a unique pop-up dining experience like no other. To celebrate the final season of the globally acclaimed Netflix series, Stranger Things, KFC Australia is launching "Hawkins Fried Chicken," a subterranean restaurant nestled within the historic, abandoned Wynyard Station Tunnels in Sydney. This limited-time event promises a nostalgic journey, free entry, and complimentary menu items, including a brand-new, mind-bending burger.

The pop-up, scheduled to open its doors on November 28th and 29th from 12 pm, invites diners to descend into an immersive recreation of the Upside Down. Guests will navigate a themed tunnel before arriving at a meticulously crafted 80s diner, designed to evoke the authentic atmosphere of Hawkins in 1987. The experience will be amplified by a vintage jukebox spinning classic 80s tunes and the allure of retro arcade games, ensuring every detail transports visitors directly into the heart of the beloved show.

A Taste of the 80s and the Upside Down

Beyond the immersive theming, "Hawkins Fried Chicken" will feature a special menu that pays homage to the era. Diners can look forward to enjoying iconic KFC Original Recipe Chicken buckets and new Saucy Wings, pulled directly from KFC's secret menu. In a delightful nod to the 80s, KFC is also reviving fan-favourite menu items from that decade, including the much-missed "The Works Burger" and the "80s Bean Salad."

The star of the new offerings is the "Upside Down Double." This innovative burger features two of KFC's signature Original Crispy fillets, ingeniously sandwiched around a soft bun. It's layered with crispy bacon, melted cheese, and a generous dollop of the specially created "Stranger Sauce."

Exclusive Merchandise and Charitable Contributions

Adding another layer to the fan experience, attendees will have the opportunity to purchase exclusive Stranger Things x KFC merchandise. This special collection includes stylish denim jackets, t-shirts, caps, and jumpers, all designed to commemorate the unique collaboration.

Importantly, all proceeds generated from the sale of this merchandise will be directly channelled to the KFC Youth Foundation. This foundation is dedicated to supporting youth mental health and wellbeing, working in partnership with respected organisations such as ReachOut Australia and the Black Dog Institute.

Accessing the Hawkins Fried Chicken Experience

For those eager to secure a spot at this one-of-a-kind event, pre-reservations for free entry are available. The "Hawkins Fried Chicken" pop-up is located within Wynyard Station. Visitors are advised to follow the signage and enter Wynyard Station via the Carrington Street entrance at Wynyard Park.

Once inside, guests should proceed down the escalators. The entrance to "Hawkins Fried Chicken" can be found through a discreet doorway situated opposite Coles Central Wynyard Express.

The Upside Down Double Goes Nationwide

While the subterranean pop-up is a Sydney exclusive, fans across Australia will soon get a taste of the Upside Down. The new "Upside Down Double" burger will be rolled out to all KFC restaurants nationwide starting December 2nd. However, this unique menu item will only be available for a limited time, encouraging fans to act fast.

Vanessa Rowed, CMO at KFC Australia, expressed her excitement about the initiative. "We're absolutely thrilled to unite the passionate KFC and Stranger Things fandoms, not only through our immersive Hawkins Fried Chicken experience, but also by bringing the deliciously strange Upside Down Double to restaurants nationwide," she stated. "This unique creation innovates with KFC's iconic flavours, perfectly reflecting our partnership alongside our joy in bringing fans unforgettable taste experiences."

This collaboration represents a significant fusion of pop culture and fast-food innovation, offering fans an extraordinary way to engage with both their favourite television series and a beloved brand. The meticulous attention to detail in recreating the 80s aesthetic and the tie-in with a charitable cause underscore KFC's commitment to creating memorable and meaningful experiences for its customers.
