French Diplomats Meet with MINURSO Officials in Laayoune

A senior French diplomatic team, which included political and military representatives from the French Embassy in Rabat, engaged in detailed talks on Thursday with officials from the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO).

A representative from the United Nations, talking to INSPIRATIONS DIGITALAR, verified that this visit underscores France's sustained engagement with the situation in the Sahara, notably concerning MINURSO's mandate, the prevailing circumstances on the ground, and the organization's endeavors to uphold peace in the area.

As per the information provided, the French contingent will be given an extensive overview of MINURSO’s activities, the obstacles they encounter, as well as their responsibility in overseeing the cease-fire accord established in 1991 under the oversight of the United Nations.

Discussions are anticipated to tackle significant operational hurdles confronting MINURSO, notably in areas east of the security barrier, where tensions have risen subsequent to the Polisario Front's exit from the truce following the events at Guerguerat in November 2020.

Simultaneously, a separate team from the French Embassy, focusing on strategic alliances, will conduct specialized discussions with MINURSO on Friday. This contingent comprises the director of AFD in Morocco, who oversees strategic partnerships, along with the leader of the division handling financial institutions and local government bodies.

These diplomatic meetings occur as France steps up its surveillance of the Saharan situation, mere weeks ahead of the scheduled United Nations Security Council session in April. At this gathering, council members will likely receive updates from the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, and the head of MINURSO, Alexander Ivanko.

This diplomatic effort highlights France's ongoing engagement with the developing circumstances in Western Sahara, as MINURSO tackles intricate political and security issues in carrying out its mission.
