A truly unique discovery has been made in the waters off Costa Rica: a nurse shark exhibiting an unprecedented combination of rare pigmentation conditions. The six-and-a-half-foot-long shark, caught during a sport fishing expedition, displayed both xanthism and albinism, a pairing never before documented in cartilaginous fish in the Caribbean.

Understanding Xanthism and Albinism

Xanthism is a genetic condition resulting in an overproduction of yellow pigments. This leads to unusually yellow or golden skin, scales, or fur. While xanthism has been observed in various animal species, including some fish, reptiles, and birds, its presence in cartilaginous fish like sharks, rays, and skates was previously undocumented.

Albinism, on the other hand, is characterized by a lack of melanin, the pigment responsible for dark coloration. This absence results in pale skin, scales, or fur, and often leads to white or red eyes.
