A Journey of Courage and Resilience
Jay, a 53-year-old woman from Birmingham, has become a symbol of strength and resilience after being diagnosed with breast cancer in August 2021. Her journey began when she discovered a lump in her left breast, which initially led doctors to believe it was benign. However, a biopsy revealed the presence of a tumour, leading to urgent surgery and a series of treatments that followed.
On the day of her niece's wedding, Jay received the devastating news that she had cancer. The moment was overwhelming, and she recalls breaking down in tears, struggling to process the reality of her diagnosis. Despite the shock, she attended the wedding, showing her determination to live life to the fullest.
After undergoing surgery and reconstructive procedures, Jay faced months of chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and other treatments. Now, almost five years later, she has found the strength to walk the catwalk as one of Breast Cancer Now's models in a charity fashion show. This event aims to raise awareness about breast cancer and celebrate the individuality of those affected by it.

Jay was one of 24 models—23 women and one man—who walked the catwalk to represent Postcode Lottery players who have raised £16.6 million for Breast Cancer Now. The show’s goal is to highlight that breast cancer can affect anyone but doesn’t have to stop them from living a full life.

Jay described the experience as transformative, saying it felt like becoming part of a family that understood her journey. She emphasized the importance of looking good in nice clothes, shoes, and makeup, even during chemotherapy. Jay recalled how she dressed up for the event, bringing her bag and fancy shoes, and finding joy in the experience despite the challenges of losing her hair and eyelashes.

Her participation in the fashion show was a dream come true, allowing her to express her identity and show her loved ones that she was still living her life. Jay also shared how the experience helped her realize the impact of her journey and the importance of community support.
Jay’s courage didn’t end with the fashion show. After her surgery, she ran a half marathon in Manchester, defying her consultant’s advice. She also hosted a large 50th birthday party before receiving the all-clear, believing she was running out of time. When she finally got the all-clear, she celebrated in her own way by ringing a bell she bought from a second-hand market.
Jay also entered the London Marathon to celebrate four people in her life who had cancer. Though the race was challenging, she completed it, reflecting on the loss of friends and family members along the way.
Since then, Jay has been ticking off her bucket list with trips to the Rio Carnival and the World Cup, with plans for a trip to Japan in the future. She now lives life with a sense of urgency, doing everything she wants to do while managing ongoing health issues like fibromyalgia.
Despite the challenges, Jay remains grateful for life and continues to inspire others with her positive attitude. She emphasizes the importance of kindness, living each day to the fullest, and not getting into conflicts with others.
Rachael Franklin, chief engagement officer at Breast Cancer Now, praised Jay for sharing her story and participating in the fashion show. She highlighted the importance of events like The Show and the support from Postcode Lottery players in funding life-changing initiatives.
Laura Chow, Head of Charities at Postcode Lottery, called Jay’s story inspirational and moving, noting that the event was a celebration of life. Jay’s journey serves as a powerful reminder that breast cancer does not define a person, and that there is hope and strength to be found in every step of the journey.
