Introducing TimAI: South Africa’s AI Tax Assistant
TaxTim, a leading tax assistance provider in South Africa, has launched an artificial intelligence (AI) tax assistant called TimAI. This innovative tool is designed to offer instant tax-related answers through WhatsApp, providing free support to anyone in the country. As the 2026 tax filing season approaches on 13 July, TimAI will also be available as an in-platform version.
TimAI is specifically built to handle tax-related queries, offering explanations of rules, performing calculations, and flagging potential issues. However, it does not file returns, make payments, or communicate directly with the South African Revenue Service (SARS). Its primary function is to assist users with their tax understanding, rather than acting as a general-purpose assistant.
Daniel Swiegers, director of TaxTim, highlights that what makes TimAI unique is its conversational interface, which has evolved beyond the frustrating chatbots of the past. “For South Africans, filing taxes is one of the most stressful things they do all year,” he says. “WhatsApp has become the default way South Africans deal with business, and we’re leveraging this to make tax assistance more accessible.”
Addressing Risks of AI in High-Stakes Domains
Despite the benefits of AI tools, there are concerns about their reliability. A paper published in the Journal of Empirical Legal Studies in March last year warned that large language models used in AI tools can "hallucinate" or fabricate false information, making them risky for high-stakes tasks such as tax compliance.
Swiegers acknowledges that TimAI is not immune to errors but emphasizes that the tool is designed to manage these risks effectively. “We have restricted training to authoritative South African tax sources rather than the open internet,” he explains. TimAI is programmed to say “I don’t know” when it cannot provide a reliable answer, ensuring users are not misled.
Building Trust Through Transparency
To maintain accuracy, TimAI is governed by explicit guardrails. Behind the scenes, TaxTim continuously monitors outputs, reviews accuracy, and maintains a structured feedback loop. The company's head of tax and wider tax team test TimAI against real scenarios on an ongoing basis.
Swiegers notes that while TimAI provides valuable guidance, it is not a substitute for professional tax advice. “For anything with a material tax impact, users should confirm with one of our registered tax practitioners before acting,” he says. “That’s also why our human team isn’t going anywhere.”
Personalized Support Based on User History
When a user has previously filed taxes with TaxTim, TimAI gains access to their actual filing history. This context allows the AI to provide more accurate and tailored responses compared to generic guidance. “This personalization helps ensure that the advice given is relevant to the user’s specific situation,” Swiegers explains.
Data Privacy and Ethical Use
TaxTim is committed to protecting user data and ensuring ethical use of AI. The company processes information only on lawful grounds, such as providing the service requested, meeting legal obligations under tax legislation, or with the user’s consent.
Swiegers adds that TaxTim may use information from a user’s TaxTim profile, current return, prior returns, and their conversation with TimAI to answer tax questions. On WhatsApp, TimAI works on the question the user sends, and users are encouraged not to enter irrelevant information.
Final Notes on AI and Human Collaboration
It is important to note that TimAI provides educational guidance and explanations, not formal tax advice. Users are encouraged to exercise their own discretion when evaluating the outputs and acting on the information provided. For formal tax advice, TaxTim’s team of registered tax practitioners remains the best channel.
Swiegers concludes, “Where someone needs formal advice, our team of registered tax practitioners is the right channel.” He emphasizes that while AI can enhance efficiency, it is the expertise of professionals that ensures accuracy and compliance in complex tax matters.
