The Tragedy at the Islamic Center of San Diego

On a fateful Monday, the Islamic Center of San Diego was struck by a tragic shooting that claimed the lives of three individuals. According to the center’s director, Imam Taha Hassane, the victims included a shopkeeper who had dedicated 40 years of service to the mosque, a neighbor and friend, and a security guard who played a crucial role in saving lives during the attack.

The security guard, identified as Amin Abdullah, a father of eight, acted heroically by using his radio to warn teachers inside the mosque’s school to lock the classroom doors before his death. At the time, there were 200 children present, and his actions are believed to have saved many lives. Hassane emphasized the significance of the guard's efforts, stating that his actions likely prevented further loss of life.

Edward Ahmed Mitchell, national deputy director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, confirmed the identity of the security guard but chose not to reveal the names of the other two victims. He described all three as beloved and trusted members of the community.

Authorities are currently investigating the incident, which is being treated as a hate crime. While the names of the victims and suspects have not been officially confirmed, two suspects, aged 17 and 18, were found dead in a car a few blocks away from the mosque. The cause of their deaths appears to be self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

Background and Community Response

Two hours before the active-shooter report, police received a call from the mother of a runaway juvenile who believed her son was suicidal. She reported that her vehicle and several weapons were missing, and her son was with a companion dressed in camouflage. This information led to a search using license plate recognition technology, which was ongoing when the active-shooter report came in.

When officers arrived at the mosque around 11:47 a.m., they discovered three bodies outside. San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl praised the security guard’s actions, stating that his efforts helped minimize the situation to the front area of the mosque. “His actions were heroic, and, undoubtedly, he saved lives today,” Wahl said.

Sam Hamideh, whose son attends the mosque’s school, expressed his deep emotional connection to Abdullah. He described Abdullah as a friend and a man committed to kindness, including helping homeless people. Hamideh reflected on the tragedy, noting that Abdullah became a "martyr" while trying to protect the children.

Impact on the Community

The Islamic Center released a statement mourning the loss of three “pillars of our community” and referred to the victims as “men of courage, sacrifice and faith.” The center also established a fund to support those affected by the shooting.

Authorities are urging the public for more information, as the suspects have not made any known threats to the mosque. However, hate rhetoric is believed to have played a role in the incident.

The shooting occurred on the first day of Dhul Hijjah, one of the most sacred periods in the Islamic year. In response to the tragedy, Mayor Todd Gloria announced plans to increase security at houses of worship in San Diego. Governor Gavin Newsom also condemned the act, stating that “hate has no place in California.”

Imam Hassane expressed his disbelief and sorrow over the incident, which has deeply affected the Muslim community in San Diego. He described the mosque as a “peaceful place” that attracts up to 1,500 people during Friday prayers and mentioned plans for a vigil on Tuesday.

Hassane hopes the incident serves as a wake-up call for American society regarding gun violence and Islamophobia. “When we don’t watch what we say about one another as Americans, this is what we get,” he said.

Broader Implications

The shooting at the Islamic Center highlights the increasing need for security measures at houses of worship across the country in response to deadly attacks on religious communities. As the community grapples with the aftermath, the focus remains on healing, remembrance, and the importance of unity in the face of hate.
