A Dental Nurse’s Ordeal After a False Methamphetamine Test

A young dental nurse found herself in a shocking situation after testing positive for methamphetamine during a roadside drug test. The incident, which left her in tears and led to an arrest, was sparked by her consumption of a popular post-gym energy drink called OxyShred.

The woman, who is based in Sydney, shared her story of how she was pulled over for a random drug test the day after Anzac Day while driving home from the gym. She had just finished a can of Kiwi Strawberry OxyShred, a caffeine-based drink marketed as a thermogenic fat burner designed to increase metabolic rate, boost energy, and aid in fat loss.

The Roadside Test That Changed Everything

As she was being tested, the police officer informed her that she had tested positive for methamphetamine. This came as a complete shock to her, as she had never used the drug before. "I thought he was having a laugh with me," she said. "I said, 'Sorry, what?'"

She was taken into a testing van where further swabs were conducted, and the results were sent to a laboratory for analysis. During this time, she was visibly upset and crying, overwhelmed by the situation.

The Inaccuracy of Roadside Drug Tests

According to traffic law expert Karen Stanley, roadside saliva tests, often referred to as "lick tests," are only initial screening tools. While they can give a preliminary result, they are not always accurate. "Those lick tests are known to be wildly inaccurate," she said. "You don't have to go with police for the second test, but there would be charges if you refused."

In most Australian states, drivers are not formally charged until lab results confirm the presence of an illicit substance. However, false positives can occur due to legal substances like medications or ingredients in supplements.

The Role of OxyShred in the Case

The woman claimed she repeatedly told the officers that she could not have taken methamphetamine. "In my head, I'm like, excuse me, sir, I didn't even go out on Anzac Day. How can I test positive to meth?" she asked. She also inquired about the frequency of false positives, and the officer told her they were rare, with a 94% accuracy rate.

However, Ms. Stanley explained that false positives can happen when legal substances trigger a reaction similar to an illicit drug. "Lots of things can give you a false positive," she said. "People can get an immediate disqualification from that."

A Third Test Clears Her Name

After asking if she was allowed to drive home, the woman was given a third test by the police, which came back negative. She was then cleared to leave. However, Ms. Stanley warned that things could have turned out much worse for her.

"That's the police going over and above what they have to do," she said. "People lose their licence this way. Imagine if you were a truck driver or something and that's your job and your livelihood gone."

The Role of AI in Identifying the Cause

Later, the dental nurse turned to ChatGPT to find out what might have triggered the false positive. She listed everything she had consumed that day, including her pre-workout supplement, water, and the can of OxyShred. According to the AI, the ingredients in OxyShred—specifically the bitter orange extract—could potentially cause a false positive in a random drug test.

A Warning to Others

The woman shared her experience in a video posted on social media, warning others about the potential risks of drinking OxyShred. "If you're drinking OxyShred and get pulled over for a random test, you might test positive to meth," she said.

Her video has since received over two million views, with many people sharing their own experiences. Some mentioned that they had tested positive for cocaine without ever touching the drug, while others spoke about similar incidents involving energy drinks.

Final Thoughts

While NSW Police declined to comment on the accuracy of roadside drug tests, the case highlights the importance of understanding the limitations of these tests and the potential consequences of false positives. As more people become aware of these issues, it becomes increasingly important to advocate for more accurate and reliable testing methods.
