Paul Scholes, a former Manchester United legend and England midfielder, has expressed his strong belief that Max Dowman, the emerging star at Arsenal, should be included in the England squad for the upcoming World Cup. Scholes emphasized that there is no other English player with the same level of ability as Dowman.
Dowman has been considered as a potential surprise selection for England’s World Cup squad this summer after his impressive performances at the Emirates Stadium. The young midfielder made history by becoming the second youngest player in Premier League history when he made his debut at the start of the season. Only his teammate Ethan Nwaneri was younger when he played in the competition.
Mikel Arteta, the Arsenal manager, has been cautious about giving Dowman more playing time due to his ongoing education, but there have been growing calls for Thomas Tuchel, who will announce his final World Cup squad on May 22, to include the Arsenal prodigy.
Why Dowman Deserves a Spot
Scholes, who earned 66 caps for England, firmly believes that Dowman should be part of the squad. He praised the teenager's incredible talent and said he would personally choose him if given the chance.
Speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, Scholes said: “How good is Max Dowman? He’s unbelievable.” He added, “Do you think he should be in the England squad for the World Cup? Look at Spain with Lamine Yamal… get him in!”
Scholes also highlighted that England doesn’t have another player with Dowman’s unique abilities. He suggested that Tuchel, known for taking risks, might be the right manager to give the young talent a chance.
A Growing Movement
Rio Ferdinand, Scholes’ former teammate, also supports the idea of including Dowman in the World Cup squad. On his YouTube channel, Ferdinand stated, “I think he has to go [to the World Cup]. I think he’s special.”
Ferdinand noted that Dowman has been performing consistently against older players, even impressing his teammates and the manager. He compared Dowman to Michael Owen, who had a successful World Cup campaign at a young age.
“I didn’t play a minute at the 1998 World Cup, but that experience really helped me in 2002,” Ferdinand said. “I would love to see him go – it would be so exciting for English football.”
The Debate Continues
While many are in favor of selecting Dowman, others argue that it might be too soon for the young player to face the pressure of a World Cup. However, supporters believe that the experience would be invaluable for his development.
As the debate continues, Dowman is focused on helping Arsenal win their first Premier League title since 2004. The Gunners can secure the title if they win their remaining two games against Burnley and Crystal Palace.
Final Thoughts
With his remarkable talent and potential, Max Dowman has captured the attention of football fans and experts alike. Whether or not he makes the World Cup squad remains to be seen, but one thing is clear—his impact on the game is already being felt.
