King Charles Unveils His Own English Single Malt Whisky, Set to Dazzle Festive Season

His Majesty King Charles III, a monarch with undeniable Scottish heritage, a cherished Highland holiday home, and a fondness for traditional kilts, is poised to make a significant splash this Christmas. While he reigns as the current King of Scotland, his upcoming launch of a new English single malt whisky might raise a few eyebrows among purists.

The "Royal tipple," meticulously crafted with barley cultivated at his Highgrove estate in Gloucestershire, is slated to hit the shelves just in time for the bustling festive market. Priced at a premium AED 460 per bottle, enthusiasts can already secure their pre-orders for the Highgrove Evergreen English Single Malt Whisky, with its official release scheduled for December 4th.

The Highgrove estate has shared that the Highgrove Evergreen English Whisky represents a distinguished collaboration between Highgrove Gardens and Cotswolds Distillery. The spirit has been artfully crafted to uphold and celebrate the esteemed tradition of English single malt whisky production.

  • Craftsmanship and Ingredients: This premium whisky is exclusively made from Plumage Archer barley, a variety grown directly on the Highgrove Estate.
  • Maturation Process: The spirit undergoes a sophisticated maturation process, utilising an exclusive pairing of bourbon casks and STR red wine casks.
  • Tasting Profile: The result is described as a rich and refined spirit, boasting layered notes of orchard fruits, honeyed malt, and delicate undertones of red berries and spice.

The whisky itself is presented in an exquisite, beautifully illustrated gift box. This packaging features a personal touch from His Majesty, showcasing his own artwork titled ‘Highgrove House, a view from the Wildflower Meadow’.

The 46 per cent ABV (Alcohol By Volume) dram promises a sensory journey. Its aroma is said to be reminiscent of honey and orchard fruits, while the palate is expected to deliver notes of red berries, toasted oak, and a gentle warmth of spice.

For those who already appreciate a royal dram, a Balmoral Scotch is currently available for purchase from the estate shop. However, it's important to note that, unlike the new Highgrove malt, this Scotch is not produced from barley grown on the King's estates. Instead, it is produced at the Royal Lochnagar Distillery, situated just a mile from the iconic Balmoral Castle.

Currently, Scotland boasts over 140 distilleries, a testament to its rich whisky heritage, while England is home to approximately 30. King Charles also offers traditional Scottish whiskies on the Highgrove website, with a 70cl bottle typically priced at a more accessible AED 230. For those seeking a more exclusive experience, a Ballindalloch Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky is available for AED 1730 for a 50cl bottle.

Royal Finances and Estate Developments

In recent financial revelations, it has emerged that King Charles's personal fortune has seen a substantial increase. Over the past year, his wealth has grown by approximately AED 140 million, reaching an estimated AED 2.95 billion. This makes him considerably wealthier than his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, according to the latest figures from the Sunday Times Rich List.

The Queen's wealth was estimated at AED 1.72 billion at the time of her passing in 2022. King Charles is now believed to be AED 1.26 billion richer, an increase from his previously estimated AED 2.83 billion last year.

His Majesty derives income from sources such as the Duchy of Lancaster and the Crown Estate, which is valued at approximately AED 5.1 billion. Strict regulations govern his ability to sell or profit directly from these holdings. Instead, the income generated is channelled towards funding his public duties as sovereign and covering his living expenses.

The Sunday Times report further suggests that the King's investment portfolio could be worth as much as AED 580 million. Additionally, the horses he inherited from Queen Elizabeth are estimated to be valued at around AED 125 million.

Beyond traditional income streams, several of the King's esteemed estates are actively generating revenue through enhanced visitor experiences.

  • Balmoral Castle: Tours now grant visitors access to the interior of Balmoral Castle, offering a unique glimpse into royal life.
  • Dumfries House: This estate also provides engaging visitor experiences, contributing to its revenue.
  • Castle of Mey: The Castle of Mey has introduced luxury dining options, further boosting its appeal and income.

Furthermore, an application has been submitted to expand the capacity of the Queen’s Building at Balmoral. This development holds the potential to host private events and weddings in the future, opening up new avenues for revenue generation.

Last year, the Castle of Mey launched exclusive "champagne tours" and a "meal at the King's table," complete with accommodation at the estate's Granary Lodge, for AED 2770 per person. The castle itself welcomed over 20,000 visitors between May and October last year, demonstrating the growing public interest in these royal residences.
