Australian Woman Tragically Dies at Japanese Ski Resort
A young Australian woman from Queensland's Sunshine Coast, Brooke Day, has tragically passed away following a devastating accident at a ski resort in Japan. Japanese authorities have confirmed that Ms Day sustained critical injuries after becoming entangled in a ski lift at the Tsugaike Kogen Mountain Resort in the Hakuba Valley on Friday.
The incident occurred as Ms Day was ascending the lift in the morning. According to Hisao Kubo, the resort's chief executive, Ms Day's backpack became caught in the ski lift carriage. Resort staff immediately activated the stop button to halt the lift, and prompt rescue efforts were initiated. Ms Day was subsequently transported to hospital by ambulance, but sadly, she succumbed to her injuries later that day.
A Cherished Teammate and Vibrant Spirit
The loss of Ms Day has sent shockwaves through her local sporting communities. The Maroochydore Roos AFL Club, where she played throughout her junior and senior football years, released a heartfelt tribute expressing their profound sadness.
"It is with much heartbreak and sadness that we send out this tribute at the loss of one of the Roos family," the club stated. "Recently whilst working and enjoying time in Japan and as a result of a tragic accident, Brooke Day lost her life."
The tribute highlighted Ms Day's significant impact on the club. Described as a "talented young football player and cherished teammate," she was known for her positive and vibrant presence. Even when facing setbacks, particularly due to injury which had recently led her to step back from playing, she maintained an optimistic outlook. "She was always a positive and vibrant part of the group, always had a smile on her face and despite various setbacks she never brought her disappointments to the side," the club shared. "She was and will always be a much loved and valued member of the Roos family and be missed beyond measure." The Maroochydore Roos extended their deepest condolences to Ms Day's family, friends, and teammates, concluding their tribute with: "Rest in peace Brooke Day. You little legend, friend and teammate. Roo always. Fly high beautiful girl."
Rach Clark, a teammate, echoed these sentiments, describing Ms Day as someone who made everything better simply by being present. "Brooke was a teammate who made everything better just by being there. So humble and hardworking. The ultimate teammate in every sense," Clark said. "She was sweet, caring, and never gave up, no matter what injury she faced, doing it all with her cheeky smile. It was a privilege to have played alongside her."
Beyond her involvement with the Maroochydore Roos, Ms Day also played on the senior squad for the Nambour Toads Rugby Union Club and was an alumna of Mountain Creek State High School. Both the club and the school have been contacted for comment.
A Community Mourns and Offers Support
The Tsugaike resort has indicated plans to organise a tribute to honour Ms Day, to be held once the ongoing safety inspection is completed, out of respect for her family. Mr Kubo reiterated the resort's condolences to the Day family and pledged their support in any way possible. The resort is cooperating fully with authorities as investigations continue.
Further tributes have come from the Alexandra Headland Surf Life Saving Club, where Ms Day was a "much-loved" former staff member. In a statement on social media, the club expressed how deeply her loss had been felt. Ms Day was a valued member of their café team and the wider club community, celebrated for her kindness, humour, and vibrant spirit. "Brooke brought so much more than her hard work to the workplace — her warmth and positivity lit up every room," the statement read. The club extended its sympathies to her family and friends, noting that she would forever hold a special place in their hearts.
Ms Day also had prior work experience at Hakuba Physio and Asia Physio, businesses which have also been contacted for comment.
The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has confirmed it is providing consular assistance to Ms Day's family during this incredibly difficult time. A spokesperson conveyed their deepest condolences, stating, "We send our deepest condolences to the family at this difficult time. Owing to our privacy obligations we are unable to provide further comment."
