The Cost of AI Ambitions
Meta, the tech giant behind Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, is facing a turbulent internal climate as it races to dominate the artificial intelligence (AI) landscape. This aggressive push for AI supremacy has come at a significant cost, with massive layoffs, increased employee surveillance, and high-profile departures creating a sense of unease among its workforce.
Since early 2025, Meta has been implementing frequent layoffs, including a major cut in the spring when the company reduced its workforce by 10 percent—approximately 8,000 jobs—and restructured another 7,000 roles. For those who remain, the pressure to adapt to new AI initiatives has led to growing discontent.
One such initiative, an internal AI training program, has sparked accusations of excessive surveillance. Employees have reported being monitored through data collection efforts that track clicks, keystrokes, and browsing activity. This program, known as the Model Capability Initiative, was launched in April but suspended on June 22 due to concerns over privacy and potential regulatory issues.
Zuckerberg, who has positioned AI as the core of Meta’s future, defended the initiative during an internal meeting, stating, "AI models learn by watching really smart people do things." However, the program faced strong opposition from employees, with over 1,600 signing a petition demanding its termination. Some likened the company to a "data extraction factory," highlighting their frustration with the invasive nature of the project.
The suspension came after private conversations and performance data were inadvertently made accessible to all staff, raising concerns about data security. European regulators also took notice, given that the system captured exchanges between employees across continents.
In response to these concerns, a Meta spokesperson stated that the program was designed with privacy safeguards. They added, "While we have no indication at this time that any data was improperly accessed by Meta employees, we're pausing it while we investigate."
A Struggle for Innovation
Despite these challenges, Meta continues to invest heavily in AI, aiming to close the gap with industry leaders like Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic. The company's AI models have repeatedly faced delays and underperformance, both internally and externally.
To regain momentum, Zuckerberg invested over $14 billion last year into Scale AI, a San Francisco-based startup, and brought in its CEO, Alexandr Wang, to lead a "superintelligence" lab within Meta. However, this move has not been universally welcomed.
Several key figures have since left the company, including Yann LeCun, a leading figure in modern AI who had headed Meta’s AI research since 2013. LeCun found himself reporting to Wang, who was significantly younger and lacked experience in research. He eventually left Meta at the end of 2025 to start his own venture.
LeCun criticized the direction of the company in an interview with the Financial Times, stating that while Wang "learns fast," he lacks experience in research and is pursuing a "dead end" quest.
Expanding Horizons and Legal Challenges
Meta's ambitions extend beyond social media. The company is investing in consumer electronics, particularly smart glasses, and exploring a new prediction-market app called Arena, potentially in partnership with Polymarket and Kalshi. These moves signal a broader strategy to diversify its offerings and stay competitive in the evolving tech landscape.
However, legal challenges continue to loom large. In March, a Los Angeles jury found Meta liable for the effects of social media addiction, just one day after a separate ruling in New Mexico highlighted the company's failure to protect minors. While Meta has appealed the decision, more lawsuits are expected this year.
As Meta navigates these complex challenges, the balance between innovation and employee well-being remains a critical issue. The company's future will depend on how effectively it can address these internal and external pressures while maintaining its position at the forefront of AI development.
